2014 UMYF Mission Trip
to Puerto Rico
Four adults and seven young people from the Sigourney UMC Youth Group traveled to Caguas, Puerto Rico on a missions’ trip
August 2-9, 2014.  The local missions’ team served with youth groups from other areas in carrying out a variety of projects,
including home repairs and maintenance, painting, playing with disadvantaged children and cleaning a local park.
They shared God's love through their work and their time with the families that they will be serving.
Even though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, the people who live there face many challenges on a daily basis that residents
of the fifty states do not.  The incidence of substance abuse, disease, corruption, crime and poverty are some of the highest
in the Americas, with over 45% of the population living below the poverty line.  Puerto Rico experiences some
of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS, drug addiction and alcoholism of any U.S. state or territory.
It is hoped that each of our youth group members will be able to participate in a mission trip sometime
during their four years of high school.  The next trip will take place some time in the next few years.
Pictured below are all but one of those who went to Puerto Rico.
All youth grades 7-12 are welcome to join in UMYF activities.
You may contact youth leaders Jaci or Kelly for more info about UMYF activities.
